Lawn Care

Whenever the season calls for it, you need the best leaf blower to take care of your outdoor space. You might be a professional landscaper or simply a homeowner who needs to keep your yard clear. You have a lot of options to choose from, but making sense of them all can prove overwhelming.

After digging through all of the competitors on the market, you want a list of the best leaf blower models you can buy for this year. You may not have the time or patience to dig through every recommendation. So, let's take a look at the top models under consideration.

What Makes the Best Leaf Blower?

Finding the best leaf blower means narrowing down exactly what kind of leaf blower you want to purchase. Do you want yours to run on gas, or are you more comfortable operating an electric version? Let’s go over the different types of leaf blowers you can choose from.

Electric/corded

Plug-in electric is great for a leaf blower, as it's a balance between economical and powerful. In fact, thanks to the steady power supply, most electric leaf blowers allow for vacuuming and mulching. If you’re a fan of creating compost or bagging your trimmings to feed your garden, stick with an electric leaf blower.

An electric leaf blower is going to save you a lot of money on gas. Not only does this help your wallet, it also helps your back. The corded electric leaf blower in your shed isn’t going to need a battery or gas tank. This means less time wondering if you can haul it across the yard and more time actually using the leaf blower to clean up your personal space.

Downsides to corded leaf blowers

A big chunk of the leaf blowers we went through for this review came from this category. The obvious drawback of a plug-in leaf blower is the cord itself. You’ll have to be mindful of a constant hazard at or near your feet. So, the potential for tripping over yourself is very real.

Greenworks 24012 7 Amp Single Speed Electric 160 MPH Blower
  • To reduce sound levels, limit the number of pieces of equipment used at any one time
  • Features a coverage area of 150 cubic feet per meter

Battery-powered electric/cordless

The use of a cordless electric leaf blower has come a long way since the 1960s. Best of all, you you won’t need to lug around a battery the size of your first car while doing simple yard work. Now, you’ll find simple lithium-ion cells inside this kind of leaf blower. And you’ve probably used them before in laptop computers or cell phones, so you know they're reliable.

Downsides to cordless leaf blowers

Battery-operated models can make for the best leaf blower if you have a regular ritual. Sweeping your driveway or sidewalk during the fall, you’ll no doubt be using a leaf blower every week. If you use your blower for 30 minutes or more, however, you might want to consider going with an electric plug-in model or using gas if you need portability.

There’s no reason you can’t invest in additional battery packs or chargers for a cordless electric. However, the cost can add up very quickly. So, choose wisely before you cut the cord for the best leaf blower for your home.

Gas-powered

One of the most powerful and popular options for the best leaf blower is to go the gas-operated route. Anyone who runs their own business and uses a leaf blower is most likely going to be using one that runs on gas. Mainly, it gives you the most freedom of movement. And there's the simple fact that they’re just more powerful than electric models. If you have a backpack-style leaf blower, you could be wielding as much as four times the power of an electric blower.

Downsides to gas-powered leaf blowers

Gas-operated leaf blowers don’t come without their drawbacks. First, they are loud. So, if you plan on using one for longer than an hour, you’ll need to invest in a set of earplugs if you value your hearing. We’re not talking jet-engine decibels, but you will get some definite ringing if you aren’t careful.

Another thing to remember is the complicated setup necessary with a gas-powered leaf blower. While you can buy pre-mixed gasoline, you’ll need to be sure it includes a special type of oil in the fuel for proper functioning. Regular gasoline you would find at any pump won’t cut it.

If you can get past these, you’ll understand the reigning popularity of gas-powered blowers. Keep it gassed up and you’ll be using one for over six hours. Of course, you’ll want to keep your eye on the price of gasoline to balance everything. However, if you have enough clients, you won’t have an issue.

Push blowers

Finally, one of the most powerful and popular options for finding the best leaf blower is to go the gas-operated route with a push blower.

For the professional only, this is the best leaf blower for people who have a ton of ground to cover. You’ll push this leaf blower just like you would a lawn mower. However, seeing as this kind of leaf blower weighs over 150 pounds, you’ll be thankful it comes on wheels.

DOWNSIDES TO push BLOWERS

Even something as industrial as a push blower has its limits. If you’re working with a solid road or pavement, the build is perfect. However, if all you have is grass or wet terrain, the on-road wheels aren’t going to cut it. Unfortunately, this kind of blower also has a tendency to pick up any loose sod because of its strength.

Furthermore, if you’re working with a driveway with a hill, be ready to bulk up. Going down a slope is just fine with the wheels on this but coming back up is another story. You won’t win a battle with physics and momentum when you’re trying to push one of these monsters up the driveway.

Features to Look for in the Best Leaf Blower

When you decide to purchase the best leaf blower available, take the time to consider some of the statistics. Check out the data given for each of the features below to see if you’re buying the model you want.

  • Cubic feet per minute gives you an idea of how much volume the blower can realistically push in a given session. You can use this to determine how powerful the leaf blower is.
  • Miles per hour tells you the actual speed coming out of the blower itself. If you have more of an airhole to maneuver through, the speed measure will drastically change. Small openings will give you higher speeds, while a wider opening sacrifices quickness for a higher range of motion.
  • Watts explains the total energy consumed by a given leaf blower. These number are listed directly by any manufacturer.

Which is the Best Leaf Blower on the Market?

Now that we’ve shown you what you need to look for in the best leaf blower, let’s get to the actual test results for each blower we put to the test.

Toro 51621

Toro 51621 UltraPlus Leaf Blower Vacuum, Variable-Speed (up to 250...
  • Superior blowing and mulching proven by controlled laboratory testing
  • Powerful up to 250 mph degree. 350 CFM blow mode and 410 CFM Vac mode
  • Vacuum tube, bottom-zip bag, cord storage hook, shred-all shred ring and time-saving oscillating tube included;...

This is undoubtedly one of the best leaf blowers we have ever used. It also happens to be Toro’s highest-selling model on the market. So, you don’t have to just take out word for it. Best of all, you can attach mulching and bagging accessories, and even customize the nozzle to figure out how you want to blow air. While it’s highly adjustable, we like it for the amount of power it puts out.

We learned that the Toro model was great at getting the job done, no matter the size. Large piles of leaves and even some bigger debris were no problem for this machine. In fact, the Toro competed admirably against some of the backpack leaf blowers we ran through the gauntlet.

Using the accessories that come with the Toro, you’ll be able to do vacuuming jobs that other blowers simply cannot accomplish. There’s an oscillating tip that removes a lot of the sweeping effort usually needed with your typical leaf blower. This didn’t work as well on grass, but against solid ground, it was flawless.

Of course, the Toro isn’t immortal. You’ll need to do some major swapping if you want to use it as a vacuum, and it isn’t as easily fitted as you might like. Also, if you need a cord, you’ll have to find one yourself, as the Toro doesn’t come with any inside its package. It’s a small hindrance for an otherwise excellent leaf blower.

DEWALT DCBL720P1

Sale
DEWALT DCBL720P1 20V MAX 5.0 Ah Lithium Ion XR Brushless Blower
  • Brushless Motor maximizing motor efficiency and durability
  • Innovative axial fan design that maximizes on air output and run time
  • 400 CFM and 90 MPH performance

We already discussed the advantages of gas over electric when looking for the best leaf blower. If you told us the DEWALT had an invisible gas tank somewhere, we would have a tough time putting up an argument.

You won’t have any problems lifting leaves that have gently settled on your sidewalk or on top of your yard when you activate the DEWALT. And thanks to the cordless aspect of this leaf blower, you can quickly move through your space and skip any of the clutter that comes with plugging in. The great part about having a cordless model like this one is the freedom that comes with a powerful electric motor.

Speaking of electric motors, your neighbors will love you for using this instead of an obnoxious-sounding gas leaf blower. You can even change the speed with the switch contained near the handle. If you need to prevent speed-toggling during a job, you can lock it into place on the same panel. The noise level is probably the same as a small vacuum.

However, the DEWALT isn’t going to be your first choice if you have an enormous estate. For a piece of land that stretches across several acres, you’ll need something more powerful or more battery-efficient. The DEWALT will run out of juice in less than 20 minutes, which can get annoying if you’re trying to cover a lot of ground. You might get a few more minutes if you turn down the speed, but it’s still a hindrance compared to being plugged in or running on gas.

For the lower cost, we like having the DEWALT around. It’s never going to replace a more powerful model as the best leaf blower, but you’ll be thankful for the ease of use when you fire this one up.

Which of These Two is the Best Leaf Blower?

Deciding between the Toro and the DEWALT comes down to how much space you need to work with. In summary, if you only have a small property and you don’t plan on spending a lot of time blowing leaves, we would tell you to go with the DEWALT. You won’t be dropping any additional money into it for gas, and you can knock out a small driveway in a matter of minutes.

We would advise you to be mindful of the small battery time, however. We can’t get past the fact that the DEWALT leaf blower will deplete its charge faster than a lot of TV comedy episodes. This is fine if you have your yard work down to an exact science and time, but any bigger jobs are not going to work for the DEWALT.

On the other hand, the Toro plowed through just about anything we tested. We’re giving this one our vote for best leaf blower, especially when it overperformed in areas we didn’t expect. Thanks to its raw power, we felt ready to retire our old machines. With the possible exception of commercial property, the Toro is up to any task. It might even work out well for landscapers who need an emergency backup leaf blower.

Final Thoughts on Leaf Blowers

We hope you were able to figure out what to look for when finding the best leaf blower for your needs. Even if you don’t go with one of the models we mentioned in this piece, you now have an idea of what to look for when you’re browsing the store.

Using a leaf blower doesn’t have to be a chore if you know what you’re getting when making a purchase. Given the right range of motion and velocity, you can turn the act of blowing leaves into a game where you need to get the highest score. And once you find the right model, your leaf blower will be as much of an asset as any other tool in your shed or garage.
